Judas Iscariot

2006

oil on canvas

48" X 36"

I always think Judas Iscariot gets a bad wrap. He is single handedly responsible for initiating the passion cycle. It was fate. Judas was given a role that brought to fruition the destiny of the Messiah. So what's the problem? He didn't even keep the money. Then, he feels so guilty he kills himself. You would think he would get a special dispensation for that one. Apparently St. Perpetua did.

I know, how about this angle; it wasn't Judas, it was Satan! Come on you can forgive him for that. I know a lot of you Christians are big Satan fans. You give him all the credit when something goes wrong.

Anyway, Judas looks out at us in agony and confusion. Although he is the person who sets into place the chain of events that will result in the crucifixion of Jesus, which for most Christians is the foundation of their belief, he is still condemned. Oh well, sometimes you just can't win!
